Dental Bonding

What is Dental Bonding?
Dental Bonding is quite simply, the application of a resin based dental material to conceal various dental imperfections or defects. The resin dental material matches the shade and color of the natural tooth and therefore offers excellent aesthetics. Dental Bonding restorations are primarily cosmetic restorations.

When is Dental Bonding indicated in patients?
Dental Bonding can effectively restore a number of tooth defects such as:

  • Diastemas, or gaps present between teeth
  • Chipped teeth
  • Cracked teeth
  • Tooth shape and size discrepancies
  • Permanent tooth discolorations (such as those resulting from dental treatments or intrinsic staining)
  • Exposed tooth roots for protection against decay
  • Tooth wear from abrasion, erosion or attrition
  • Aesthetic tooth decay restoration
  • Cosmetic alternative to metal colored amalgam restorations

How is Tooth Bonding done?
Tooth bonding is one of the quickest, most aesthetically pleasing solutions for chipped, discolored, decayed or gapped teeth. It Cosmetic bonding in Chandlerinvolves the application of a resin dental material to restore the structure and aesthetics of a compromised tooth.
Tooth isolation is first established with cotton rolls or rubber dams to prevent contamination. Resin shade selection is then done in adequate, natural lighting to achieve an ideal match. The affected region is then prepared if needed, for example, in case of caries, the decayed portion is removed using a mechanical hand piece. An etchant is then applied to the surface to create micro-porosities that contribute to better bonding. This etchant is washed off after a few seconds. The tooth is dried and a bonding agent is applied with which the resin material will adhere to the tooth.
After curing the bonding agent, the soft resin material is then applied to the tooth surface which can be manipulated and modeled to match the natural morphology and shape of the tooth. This resin can be extended to close gaps and to make the teeth appear longer if needed. Once the ideal shape and morphology has been created using the resin, the material is cured, or hardened, using a blue dental light. Polishing is done if needed, to make the surface appear shiny and smooth.

What are the benefits of Tooth Bonding?
Tooth Bonding is the most convenient and efficient method of concealing a number of tooth defects to create a better smile. The restorations have high aesthetic value and can effectively close unsightly gaps between teeth, create artificial extensions for naturally short teeth, repair cracks and small fractures, hide discoloration and a number of other imperfections. The nature and properties of resin make it highly versatile. The procedure is non-invasive, painless and can be completed in a single sitting.

Are there any drawbacks associated with Tooth Bonding?
Leading dentists generally encourage patients to opt for porcelain crowns or composite fillings for the aesthetic restoration of structurally compromised teeth. This is because resin restorations lack good strength and are therefore prone to fracture when subjected to heavy forces. It is common for resin tooth bonding restorations to chip off or break if the patient is not careful. Another drawback is the fact that resin can get discolored if frequently exposed to staining foods and beverages. Once discolored, they do not match the nature tooth, cannot be re-whitened and require replacement.

Is the procedure painful?
Because it requires little or no tooth preparation based on the case, tooth bonding procedures are generally entirely painless. They are non-invasive and can be performed without the need of administering local anesthesia.
