Root Canals

Persistent tooth pain can affect your ability to eat, sleep, and focus on daily activities. When infection or inflammation reaches the inside of a tooth, root canal treatment may relieve the discomfort and help preserve the natural tooth.

At Anantuni Dental, Dr. Sandhya Anantuni uses advanced imaging, modern techniques, and a gentle approach to make treatment as comfortable and understandable as possible.

What Is a Root Canal?

A root canal treats infected or inflamed tissue inside a tooth. This tissue, known as the pulp, contains nerves and blood vessels.

The pulp may become damaged because of:

  • Deep tooth decay
  • A crack or fracture
  • Dental trauma
  • Repeated treatment on the same tooth

During treatment, Dr. Anantuni removes the affected tissue and thoroughly cleans the inside of the tooth. The space is then sealed to protect it from further infection.

A crown or another restoration is typically placed afterward to rebuild the tooth and protect it during biting and chewing.

Signs You May Need
a Root Canal

Symptoms vary depending on the tooth and the extent of the damage. Common warning signs may include:

Persistent or severe tooth pain

Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold

Swelling or tenderness in the nearby gums

Darkening or discoloration of a tooth

Discomfort when biting or chewing

A tooth that remains painful after an injury

These symptoms do not always mean you need a root canal. An examination and digital X-rays are necessary to identify the cause.

However, tooth pain and swelling should not be ignored. Delaying care may allow infection or damage to progress.

Benefits of Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment may:

  • Save a natural tooth that might otherwise require extraction
  • Relieve pain caused by infection or inflammation
  • Prevent infection from spreading into nearby tissue
  • Restore comfortable biting and chewing
  • Preserve the alignment of surrounding teeth
  • Reduce the need for tooth-replacement treatment
  • Protect the treated tooth with a durable restoration

Keeping your natural tooth can also help maintain the way your teeth fit and function together.

What to Expect During
Root Canal Treatment

Your appointment will be planned according to the condition of your tooth. Treatment generally includes the following steps:

  1. Examination and imaging: Digital X-rays help Dr. Anantuni evaluate the tooth and surrounding structures.
  2. Comfort preparation: The treatment area is thoroughly numbed before the procedure begins.
  3. Pulp removal: Infected or inflamed tissue is carefully removed from inside the tooth.
  4. Cleaning and sealing: The inner spaces are cleaned, disinfected, shaped, and sealed.
  5. Final restoration: A crown or another restoration is placed to rebuild and protect the tooth.

Depending on your case, the final restoration may be completed during the same visit or at a later appointment. Dr. Anantuni will explain your expected timeline before treatment begins.

After Your Root Canal

Temporary soreness or tenderness may occur after treatment. This usually improves as the surrounding tissue heals.

Dr. Anantuni will provide personalized aftercare instructions. Follow her recommendations for eating, cleaning the area, and managing temporary discomfort.

Contact our office if your symptoms feel unexpected, become more severe, or do not improve. Our team can evaluate the tooth and determine whether any additional care is needed.
