Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea affects far more than your nights—left untreated, it can impact your heart health, energy levels, and overall quality of life. At Anantuni Dental, Dr. Sandhya Anantuni offers dental sleep medicine as a dedicated area of focused expertise, helping patients identify and treat sleep-disordered breathing.

What Is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a condition in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep, often due to the airway becoming partially or fully blocked. Common signs include:

  • Loud snoring, gasping or choking during sleep
  • Morning headaches
  • Persistent daytime fatigue despite a full night’s sleep
  • Dry mouth or sore throat after sleeping

How Dr. Anantuni Helps Your Sleep

As a member of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, Dr. Anantuni is trained to evaluate the role your jaw, tongue position, and airway anatomy may play in sleep-disordered breathing.

For appropriate patients, we offer Fotona NightLase, a non-surgical laser treatment designed to help tighten and tone soft tissue in the throat, which can help reduce snoring and improve airflow during sleep. In other cases, a custom-fitted oral sleep appliance may be recommended, repositioning the jaw slightly to help keep the airway open throughout the night.

A Connected Approach to Airway Health

Sleep and airway concerns are rarely isolated from the rest of your dental health. For patients also pursuing Invisalign treatment, Dr. Anantuni can incorporate airway-focused evaluation directly into your orthodontic plan. This integrated perspective reflects our broader philosophy: your mouth, bite, and breathing are connected systems, and your treatment plan should reflect that.

Benefits of Sleep Apnea Treatment

Gum disease treatment is essential for your well-being. Our gum disease treatment:

  • Improved sleep quality and reduced nighttime interruptions
  • Non-surgical laser options through Fotona NightLase
  • Custom oral appliances as a comfortable alternative for appropriate patients
  • Reduced snoring, which can also improve rest for a partner
  • Increased daytime energy and reduced fatigue
  • A connected approach that considers bite, airway, and sleep together

Sleep Apnea Appliances: Personalized Solutions for Better Sleep

At Anantuni Dental, we believe that better sleep is an essential part of better overall health. We offer customized oral appliance therapy to help patients with obstructive sleep apnea and snoring breathe more comfortably during sleep.
We understand that every patient’s dental needs are different. Whether you are undergoing clear aligner treatment, wearing orthodontic retainers, or simply looking for an alternative to CPAP therapy, we carefully evaluate your needs to recommend the most appropriate appliance.
Our options include the Dorsal, Herbst, and OASYS oral appliances. Each is designed to support the airway by gently positioning the lower jaw forward during sleep.

Your Sleep and Airway Evaluation

Dorsal Appliance

The Dorsal appliance features a two-piece design with specially engineered wings that gently guide the lower jaw forward. Its adjustable design allows us to customize the jaw position for comfortable, effective treatment.

This appliance may be ideal for patients seeking a compact, metal-free or minimal-metal option, depending on the specific design.

Herbst Appliance

The Herbst appliance uses adjustable metal connectors attached to custom upper and lower dental trays. These connectors help maintain the lower jaw in a forward position while allowing controlled jaw movement.

It offers a durable, adjustable solution for patients who need a more structured mandibular advancement design.

OASYS Oral/Nasal Airway System

The OASYS appliance offers a distinctive approach to airway management by repositioning the lower jaw and, in certain configurations, supporting nasal airflow.

Its customizable design may be particularly useful for selected patients who wear retainers or are undergoing clear aligner treatment, following a careful assessment of compatibility.

Can You Treat Sleep Apnea While Wearing Clear Aligners or Retainers?

Yes, in selected cases. At Anantuni Dental, we recognize that patients should not have to overlook their sleep health while working toward a straighter smile.

For patients undergoing Invisalign or other clear aligner therapy, or those who wear retainers after orthodontic treatment, we evaluate specialized appliance options, like the OASYS system, that may accommodate their orthodontic needs.

Our goal is to support healthy breathing while minimizing interference with tooth movement and orthodontic retention. Compatibility depends on the appliance design, fit, stage of orthodontic treatment, and coordination with the treating dentist or orthodontist.

Your Sleep and Airway Evaluation

Your evaluation begins with a conversation about your symptoms, sleep quality, and any diagnosis or testing you may have already had. After that we conduct a clinical examination of your airway, jaw, and bite.

In some cases, we may recommend a home sleep study or coordinate with your physician if a formal sleep apnea diagnosis hasn't yet been established, since dental treatment for sleep-disordered breathing works best as part of a coordinated approach with your broader healthcare team rather than in isolation.

After we have collected all the information we need to make an educated decision, Dr. Anantuni will work with you to create a treatment plan. She will discuss whether Fotona NightLase, a custom oral appliance, or a combination approach is most appropriate for your specific anatomy and severity of symptoms. We'll also schedule follow-up visits to confirm your treatment is working as intended and make adjustments if needed.

A Personalized Approach to Better Sleep

Dr. Sandhya Anantuni combines advanced dental technology with a comprehensive approach to oral and overall health. Through detailed evaluations, digital scanning, customized appliance selection, and ongoing follow-up, we help patients find comfortable, practical solutions for sleep-disordered breathing.

Clinical note: Obstructive sleep apnea requires physician diagnosis and appropriate treatment coordination. Follow-up sleep testing is recommended to confirm appliance effectiveness. Appliances can also cause bite changes or jaw discomfort, so periodic dental monitoring is important.
