Dental Crowns

What are dental crowns?
Dental crowns are fixed prosthesis that can be fabricated using a number of different materials and are used to cover a structurally compromised tooth. The purpose of covering a tooth using a crown, commonly known as a cap, is to restore the structural stability, strength and aesthetics of the tooth. The selection of material for a crown is based on the location of the tooth in the arch, aesthetic requirements and the occlusal or masticatory forces that the restored tooth will be subjected to.

When and why does a tooth need a crown?
There are a number of indications for dental crowns. Basically, these individual fixed prostheses are used to restore a structurally Dental crowns from all anglescompromised tooth, such as in cases of:

Crowns can offer complete coverage to a compromised tooth, restoring its functionality, structural integrity and aesthetics, and protect it from further damage or loss of structure.

What materials are used to fabricate dental crowns?
Based on the requirements of the case, the three top materials used for the fabrication of crowns include Porcelain, Porcelain Fused to Metal, and Metal.
Complete porcelain crowns are ideal for patients most concerned about aesthetics, as they can be made to match the adjacent natural tooth almost perfectly. However, the main drawback of pure

Root canal treated teeth
Permanently discolored teeth (such as in cases of intrinsic staining)

porcelain crowns is that they can only be used to restore anterior teeth, because they may fracture under the load of intra-oral forces if used for the restoration of molars.
Porcelain Fused to Metal Crowns are perhaps the most commonly used of all around the world. These crowns offer excellent properties of both materials; the metal portion offers remarkable strength and stability preventing the crown from fracturing under load, and porcelain provides outstanding aesthetic value. These crowns can be used to effectively restore anterior as well as posterior teeth.
Pure metal crowns do not offer any aesthetic value and therefore can only be used to restore posterior teeth. Metal crowns offer excellent strength to withstand masticatory forces but are not advised for patients with metal allergies.

Is the procedure painful?
The dental crown procedure requires initial preparation or trimming of the tooth to ensure a good fit for the crown. This is achieved using a mechanical hand-piece fitted with burs. When the ideal tooth preparation has been done, an impression of the tooth is taken which is then used to fabricate the crown. Dental crowns are generally readied in dental laboratories and therefore the procedure may take 2-3 sittings to complete. Once the crown has been fabricated, a trial session is conducted whereby the occlusion, shade and fit are checked. The crown is then cemented onto the tooth. For patients sensitive to pain, local anesthesia is administered during the tooth preparation phase. The remaining stages are entirely painless.
